How UP Assembly election results are counted
Counting of votes for all 403 constituencies typically takes place on a single day at designated counting centres in each district, under the supervision of Returning Officers appointed by the Election Commission of India.
- Postal ballots first: Postal ballots (from election duty staff, security personnel and absentee categories) are counted first, usually from 8:00 AM.
- EVM counting by rounds: Votes recorded on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are then counted round by round, with each round's tally for every candidate announced and updated publicly.
- VVPAT verification: A random sample of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips is matched against EVM counts as an additional safeguard.
- Trends vs final result: Early "trends" (leads) are provisional; a seat's result is official only once the Returning Officer formally declares it after all rounds are counted and any recount requests are resolved.
