The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), maintained by India's Ministry of Education, has released its latest annual rankings, evaluating institutions across categories including Overall, Engineering, Management, Medical, Universities, and several other specific domains.

How NIRF ranks institutions

NIRF uses a weighted formula covering five broad parameters: Teaching, Learning & Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception. Because the weightage differs slightly by category (engineering vs management vs medical, for instance), an institute's rank can vary meaningfully between the "Overall" list and its category-specific list.

How to actually use a NIRF rank

  • Compare institutes within the same category rather than across categories — an engineering college's overall rank isn't directly comparable to a medical college's overall rank.
  • Look at the underlying parameter scores, not just the final rank, if a specific factor (like placement outcomes or research output) matters more to you personally.
  • Use NIRF alongside — not instead of — other factors like location, fee structure, and specific department strength, since a national ranking can't capture programme-level fit.
