IIT JEE Advanced 2026 Counselling: JoSAA Seat Allotment Explained

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts a single centralised counselling process for admission to all IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), using your JEE Main and, where applicable, JEE Advanced rank.

How JoSAA counselling works

  • Registration and choice filling: list every college-branch combination you'd accept, ranked in the order you actually want them — not just the ones you think you'll get.
  • Mock allotment rounds: JoSAA usually releases one or two mock rounds so you can see where your current choices would place you, and adjust before the real round begins.
  • Seat allotment rounds: across several rounds, you can choose to "float" (stay open for a better choice), "freeze" (accept and stop further allotment), or "slide" (accept but stay open for a better branch in the same institute).

Reporting and document verification

Every allotted seat needs to be confirmed within a strict deadline through online document verification and a seat acceptance fee. Missing a reporting deadline can cost you the seat entirely, so track dates closely once allotment begins.

After JoSAA

Seats that remain vacant after all JoSAA rounds are sometimes offered through a supernumerary or special round conducted by individual institutes — check directly with your allotted institute if you're on the border of a cutoff.
